A Road Rarely Traveled
"Pure logic is the ruin of the spirit" Antoine de Saint-Exupery
I seem to be spending a lot of time attempting to present the dichotomy at hand and subsequently make an argument for it.. That is the humanist or cultural position and the historical or the creative position. Rather than take a stand and pursue it in the direction of the historians, I have been trying to explain why I am going in that direction and not the “cultural” perspective. I’m not sure I want to spend a lot of time defending a position and excusing the other. Because I am not a cultural perspective kind of guy, I am going to go by the way of what I know to be true or the way of truth. And that is not my opinion but a clear historical perspective that has survived for many years in spite of the attempts of those writing the history have attempted to erase for their own benefit. So lets get something clear. When an IBM project manager cites the problems with the new hires coming out of American universities that have lesser conflict management skills and the new CEO is desperate to recruit creatives from the millennial generation...the end result is just as disastrous as it was before, there is something amiss here! The system is not working. Humanity is given the narrative to follow and it leads to continued slavery to a culture and the gatekeepers are controlling the narrative.
"Creativeness is liberation from slavery. Man is free when he finds himself in a state of creative activity." Berdyaev
Recent reading made it clear that there are gatekeepers at work, minding the work of the creative. They are the ones that get to say if it is valuable work or not. They are the ones that will tell you “good luck with that”. They are that gatekeepers that determine who is accepted to the MFA programs in this country. They screen your application for the hint of your politics and paradigm leanings. It’s a fact! There, I had my rant!
The creative process has been hijacked and we need to get it back to the mainstream before we loose it forever. Thats what I needed to say about this. In fact it should be said that a lot of things have been hijacked. I has come to my attention in recent months of the gatekeepers activity that has been going on for years. Enough said. I’m not going to spend a lot of time defending the position put out here. What needs to happen is dive into the current material that actually purposed to facilitate the creative process from the perspective of Julia Cameron, Berdyaev, C.S. Lewis, Peck, Miller and Beattie. So there you have it.
So it must be said at this point. If you want to go on this journey then stay tuned. It truly is a road less traveled and I’ll tell you why. It is a difficult path but one that has to be taken. It is a journey that will call to your attention the memories that you have buried. It will be asking you what you want to do with those memories. It will ask you to consider the people in your life that may not be good for you. It will challenge you to start asking the important questions about yourself. You will be asked if you want to continue to be enslaved or start the journey to be a free man. To get off to a good start I suggest you find the book by Julia Cameron titled “The Artist Way” and begin the work she has laid out for you. If you do anything to foster your own creativity please read her book and engage in the activity she provides.
